Academic Intervention // Virtual Distance Learning
DAA is excited to continue offering academic intervention to all grades K-7 with Ms. Shanell (kindergarten & 1st grade), Ms. Turner (2nd & 3rd grade), and Mrs. Bradley (4th-7th grade). This year academic intervention has worked a little differently than in years prior. We shifted our groups to provide assistance to our students who were just below grade level in order to give them the boost that they need to meet or exceed grade level expectations in reading or math. We use data from the NWEA MAP test, reading levels from the Fountas & Pinnell reading assessment, and teacher observations in order to create our intervention groups and direct their instruction.
This year in our math groups each of our groups would be working under the same domain as their class but would correct misunderstandings from previous grades. For example, if the fourth grade crew was learning about fractions in math, my fourth grade intervention group would also be working on fractions. However, we would look back and identify what misconceptions my students had from third grade or before that we could correct to help them be more successful while working on the grade level content with their crew.
With the new experiences that come with the Stay Home, Stay Safe order, intervention looks different than when the school year began. During the remainder of the year, Ms. Shanell and Ms. Turner are both creating video lessons for their groups to continue working on their reading and math. The K-3 groups are remaining the same for now to give our youngest learners as much consistency as we can during a completely new learning environment.
Our older students in 4th-7th grade will have a different experience with intervention. I will be providing one-on-one tutoring each week to students whose teachers have recommended that they could use extra assistance on their work that week. My previous caseload will sometimes overlap with who I am working with during a particular week, but not always. Knowing that this will be a new experience for everyone, we are giving flexibility in the upper grades in order to support kids as they need additional assistance. The older students will receive help understanding their work, operating the class website/learning new technology in order to produce work, and continue receiving instruction that corrects misunderstandings from previous years in order to successfully complete grade level content.
