Hi! My name is Annie Markey and I’m one of Detroit Achievement Academy’s Teaching Fellows. I recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master’s Degree in Education and moved to Detroit this summer. I’m so excited to join such an enthusiastic, dedicated staff and school community.  I’ll be working with the first grade class to help support Mrs. Boyer and her students.

One thing that has struck me in my first few weeks at DAA is the strong enactment of all our Habits of Character. Students and staff alike really do show Compassion, Cooperation, Perseverance, Curiosity & Creativity, Respect, and Responsibility. During indoor recess this week I listened in while a few first graders worked on a puzzle. I kid you not, from the mouths of seven year olds I heard, “we’re working together! That shows cooperation!” and “this puzzle is hard, but I know you can persevere.” Students and staff not only talk about these Habits of Character, but also exhibit them in their daily work at school. I feel really lucky to be part of such a great school. Here’s to a wonderful year of learning!
