Community at DAA

At Detroit Achievement Academy, we are definitely a close-knit community. The environment is so welcoming, friendly and caring. Relationships are built and trust is also present. Students have many opportunities and ways to feel a sense of belonging but so does staff.

  1. Crew time is a great way that staff and students can connect and get to know one another, creating friendships. This time is done in the mornings and also during some afternoons. Children and staff greet each other, lead discussions, and play games that have purpose.

  2. Students are often celebrated and rewarded for hard work and outstanding character. Students who are trying and putting forth effort are also appreciated and recognized. All of the pupils are encouraged and receive incentives to motivate them.

  3. Open door policy allows parents to visit, volunteer, and be involved with their children’s education. This enables staff and families as well as learners to get to know one another and share their concerns. Student-Led Conferences are one example of a way that community is built.

  4. Students are encouraged and given the opportunity to discuss any issues or concerns they have. Restorative practices are in place for relationships with students, students and staff, but also staff with each other. This phenomena helps to have true reconciliation amongst individuals in the community.

  5. When students leave DAA because they have been promoted to high school, the built connections and relationships still stand. Often, students are still in contact with their educators and administrators and their bond goes beyond the classroom and is very personable.
