Intervention // Engaging Early Learners: Math Resources
As the Kindergarten Interventionist, it’s been so much fun getting to know the students as learners both, academically/ socially-emotionally, analyzing data, and most importantly creating engaging hands-on activities that reinforce concepts taught in their classrooms. For learners K-2, this is a crucial time in their developmental stages to understand mathematical concepts. Traditionally in the classroom, students are introduced to manipulatives or math tools that help them further develop their understanding of concepts taught. These math tools are also used to help teachers differentiate and assist students in figuring out what tools work best for them! Studies have shown that “hands on learning" helps students to more readily understand concepts and boosts their self- confidence.” (naesp.org)
The use of these manipulatives and engaging in hands-on learning doesn’t only have to happen at school. Here are a few ideas and resources you can start TODAY that are easy and affordable!
Scavenger Hunt: Kids love to use their imagination and explore the world around them. Finding math concepts in the real world helps learners see the importance of learning from their environment. Scavenger Hunt is a game you can play in your home, at the grocery store, or even at the park! Choose a math topic such as 2D/3D shapes, numbers id, or counting and use that to guide your game. Ex: Prompt: “Find something shaped like a hexagon” “Find something that has the number 5 on it” “Find 3 socks”. This is a fun and interactive way to develop early math skills with your child.
Manipulatives such as teddy bear counters, geo boards, or cubes can get expensive. Do you have a box of Cheerios, Macaroni noodles, buttons, handy? Yes? Perfect! If your child is struggling with counting, one to one correspondence, or addition/subtraction you can use these materials to help your child visually solve math problems.
Most kids today LOVE technology, if your child has access to a tablet, smartphone, or computer here are a few math websites that are aligned with the common core standards that are fun and engaging but also effective in supporting your child! Oh, and did I mention that they are free!
IXLWe use IXL here at DAA, contact your child’s teacher for login information!
You are your child’s first teacher! I encourage you to try some of these activities at home to reinforce skills taught, to help your child master concepts and build their confidence.
Have Fun Learning!!
