Kindergarten Crew // Math Discussions

As virtual learning and hybrid learning continue, kindergarteners are thriving. It has been such a joy to see that even in a time where kindergarten is so different for the littles, they are still getting a whole experience.  Currently in kindergarten we are working on developing more independence and use of vocabulary in math. We have recently started something called Friday Math Discussions.  During this time the students are learning how to use respectful talk with each other when agreeing and disagreeing. This has been a great way to help the students learn to use more of their math vocabulary and extend using deeper thought and expression. It has been very encouraging to see students using “evidence” or reasoning with each other to explain how they agree or disagree with one another. As virtual teachers we still want to be able to teach our students to the standards we would hold them to in a classroom. By facilitating talks or discussions, it allows students to interact with one another in a way that would be similar to an in person classroom setting. Students still need independence and when they return to face-to-face learning they will need to know how to interact with their peers. As much as we can, we want to help our students interact with one another and not just sit and listen to the lesson.

Just as virtual learning is difficult for many, remember this is the first interaction with school most kindergarteners have had. I am confident that these littles will do great when they do return back to the building. Hearing a student say to another, “I disagree because I know that 3 comes before 4” shows me that even as a virtual learner, learning is taking place. Be encouraged!
