Crew // Virtual Fall Sprit Week

This past week we were able to virtually give our students some sense of normalcy and sense of celebration by continuing with our tradition of spirit weeks! I personally love spirit weeks because our students have so much fun dressing up with their friends, showing off their curiosity and creativity, and showing pride in our school and their crew.

For our fall spirit week we followed this schedule:

Monday - Crew Color Day. On Monday, each student could wear their crew color. Each crew room is painted a specific color and it’s so exciting to see students decked out in all orange, all green, or even all tie-dye.

Tuesday - Dress to Impress/Wear your favorite DAA gear. Tuesday allowed students to wear some formal wear or enjoy being cozy in a warm DAA sweatshirt or DAA t-shirt. We saw several gentlemen in button down shirts, and girls all dressed up in sparkly dresses!

Wednesday - Twin Day. Several students showed our habit of character, cooperation, when coordinating twin day outfits! This was very impressive to me when students, via zoom, figured out a group that would all wear unicorn shirts, or change their zoom photo to their same picture. I love seeing all the curiosity & creativity!

Thursday - Dress Your Age. When we asked students to “dress their age” we didn’t actually have them dress their current age. Crews were assigned an age to dress like--babies, toddlers, teenagers, and senior citizens. The effort that goes into these is adorable. “Toddlers” dressed in onesie PJs for class and carried around stuffed animals, “senior citizens” with grey wigs and cardigans, and “teenagers” wearing a loved one’s letterman jacket from when they were a teen.

Friday - Costume Day. Finally, on Friday we allowed costume day! Students were able to wear costumes and we got to see the Abominable Snowman, unicorns, and zombies. During our Friday community crew with the entire school, students were able to show off their costumes and each crew presented something to represent their crew. We saw videos, flags, and other art to show the spirit of their crews.

Each day gave our students a chance to showcase their personality and have some fun with their outfits. We know that this year is not the same as any other year at DAA but we loved bringing a sense of normalcy to our fall by using this celebratory week for spirit week. Our students had so many smiles and we could see the joy, even through a computer screen. What ways are you bringing normalcy to your kids/students while we brave through this new transition of hybrid learning?
