We are Crew, Not Passengers
In today’s fast paced world, creating a positive work environment is more important than ever. It not only enhances employee well-being but drives organizational success. At Detroit Achievement Academy, we strive to support not only our students but staff. Our mission statement states that “we support the development of students who have skills to shape their own path of high achievement with the ultimate goal of creating civically engaged, joyful citizens who are ready to change the world”. But little do they know, they have given individuals such as myself, a positive work environment where I have the ability to develop skills to help change the world for the best. Each day, we teach our students habits of character that we as a team display amongst one another to help develop positive relationships. The motto of DAA says, “We Are Crew, Not Passengers”, which makes people feel welcome whether they have worked there for multiple years or a short period of time. Understanding the culture helps us establish ways of building trust and healthy bonds with families and overall building our community.
When I began working at DAA, I had no idea what my purpose was, even working on obtaining a degree. Fortunately for me, I was given the opportunity to test my strengths and abilities along with learning what my weaknesses were. Each day I confidently showed my dedication and constantly sought feedback which led to gaining full understanding of what I could potentially bring to DAA. Great leaders are self-aware of what needs to be developed but excellent leaders have a growth mindset to learn new things and strengthen their weaknesses. My position has allowed me to reach my full potential which I am more than grateful for.
In the bible, 1 Thessalonians 5:11 reads, “Encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing”. As we go on with our lives and continue to grow as a community, we need each other. It is important for us to come together; even in difficult times, we need to lean on one another. We are Crew, Not Passengers.
